The topics and reviews in this electronic magazine cover all areas of prosthetists-orthodontist, dentists, podiatrists, physicians, orthodontists, nurses, physicians, surgical technicians, research scientists, research engineers and others who practice within the world of prosthetics and orthotics. This is also a very broad category, which encompasses many other specialties in the bio-medical sciences, including biology, chemistry, cell and tissue culture technologies, medical technology, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, pharmacotherapies, safety sciences, and veterinary science. Each month, a different expert author is chosen to write an article on a specific topic in prosthetists-orthotics, which serve as a resource for practicing clinicians. These articles are helpful to the reader in gaining a better understanding of the concepts, principles and applications of prosthetists-orthotics.

For example, in the November issue, there was an article titled "Prosthetic Implants: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications." In this article, the experts from the New York University School of Medicine discussed a new study on implantation tolerance of silicone gel. This gel can be used for filling in the jaw area, such as when a child has a cleft palate or a severely damaged or broken jaw. The gel can be introduced through the mouth of the patient into the jaw bone and then molded to form the necessary part of the prosthesis, over the course of just a few weeks. This new technique could help improve bone healing and quality of life for children who suffer from such conditions.

Another key point brought up in this article was the importance of using prosthetics and orthotics to help patients who suffer from movement-impairing diseases. In fact, many patients choose to wear such appliances to help them function more comfortably and independently. For example, a quadriplegic patient may receive spinal surgery that leaves him/her unable to use his hands and arms. To compensate for this disability, the quadriplegic may receive a postoperative device to help him/her use his arms. This prosthetics and orthotics, when fitted correctly, can help provide the patient with some level of independence after the disease has taken its toll on his/her muscles, joints and ligaments. A final topic that was touched upon in the discussions was the use of a wheelchair and/or prosthesis to help a paraplegic regain the ability to walk. A person who has suffered a spinal cord injury or other type of spinal cord abnormality that limits his/her ability to walk can greatly benefit from using prosthetics and orthotics to help him/her regain mobility. Often times, people suffering from such conditions have lost the ability to move their legs. However, by wearing an orthotic, a paralyzed patient will be able to stand up and walk without pain. Additionally, if a patient is suffering from serious paralysis, he/she may also want to consider getting a leg amputation as a way to regain mobility and function.

As you can see, there are many different reasons why an individual would undergo rehabilitation with prostheses and orthotics. Of course, some of the main reasons mentioned above are ones that can directly benefit the patient. However, many individuals suffering from conditions such as quadriplegia, MS, stroke, and spinal cord injuries also choose rehabilitation. They do so to improve the quality of their lives and for their own sense of pride. Anyone can suffer from one of these conditions and no matter what the cause is, everyone deserves a second chance. By using rehabilitation with prosthesis and orthotics, you can be sure to give yourself that chance. Discover more about prosthetists here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosthetist.
